SIX AFL players tested positive to illicit drugs in 2011 - a record low since testing began in 2005.

For only the second time in seven years, there were no recorded second failed tests.

The results were released by the AFL and the AFL Players' Association on Thursday morning as part of the AFL Illicit Drugs Policy.

The policy runs in parallel with the World Anti-Doping Authority compliant AFL Anti-Doping Code.

The number of first positive tests is a record low with the previous year where there were six first-time tests, however Hawthorn's Travis Tuck had tested positive a second and third time in 2010.

All six positive tests found traces of stimulants, with no records of cannaboids for the first time since 2006. None of the failed tests were taken on match day, with all falling out of competition.

A total of 1489 tests were conducted in 2011, down from 1654 the previous year.

The AFL's Illicit Drug Policy Program has authorised more than 8000 tests over the past six years.

AFL general manager football operations Adrian Anderson said the results had proven the effectiveness of the program.

"Illicit drug use is a major issue in our society, with recent Australian Institute of Health & Welfare figures showing a 30.5 per cent usage rate amongst males aged 20-29 in the previous 12 months," he said.

"We know that our players are not immune to poor decision-making and peer group pressure in this regard and individual players will continue to make mistakes."

AFL Players' Association CEO Matt Finnis said Australian footballers were leaders in drug education and awareness.

"By putting their hands up, AFL players - unlike just about any other group of athletes in the world - are showing their commitment to the wellbeing of the entire playing group.

"It’s pleasing that the policy continues to be effective in educating players about the dangers of using illicit drugs, allowing us to address issues of health and wellbeing in a proactive manner."
