North Melbourne is expecting the unexpected from Fremantle this weekend, as its forward-line takes a new look.

With the confirmed absences of Jesse Hogan (club suspension), Brennan Cox (hamstring), Matt Taberner (hamstring/calf) and Brandon Matera (suspension), defence coach Rhyce Shaw is preparing for all possibilities.

“I’ve been told by numerous coaches over the years that Fremantle is really unpredictable with who and what they’re going to put out on the park, and that’s very dangerous,” Shaw told North Media.

“We’ve got to prepare for all the different scenarios.

“It may be that they bring in a couple more talls or a couple of ruckmen, or they go small, so we’re going to have to be prepared for whatever they decide to do.

“We’ll make sure that we do our homework during the week, but we’re really excited for that challenge this weekend.”

This uncertainty means that how the Roos’ structure up defensively also remains in the balance.

The task of selecting a back six appears to be a bit less daunting than it was this time last month, with a number of experienced faces in Robbie Tarrant and Jamie Macmillan rejoining the main group.

“It’s really good to get some numbers back,” Shaw said.

“We’ve had some good signs heading into this week, and we’re looking forward to getting a really good group out there on Sunday.

“I’m not sure how the starting backline looks at the moment, but I’m sure the guys will put their best foot forward.”

For Shaw on a personal level, the opportunity to coach his defensive group for the first time for premiership points is an exciting one.

Arriving at Arden Street from the Swans during the off-season, the two-time AFLCA Assistant Coach of the Year has fitted in seamlessly at his new club.

“I’m just really excited to be here,” he added.

“It’s a really good group of players and a good group of coaches, and it’s just a great vibe.

“It’s been a long pre-season, and it’s good that it’s Round 1 now and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting a win on the weekend.”
