Young defender Riley Hardeman has shown his loyalty to North Melbourne, signing a two-year contract extension to stay at the club until at least the end of the 2028 season.

The 21-year-old has committed to the Kangaroos after originally being selected with pick No.23 in the 2023 AFL National Draft.

The West Australian product from Swan Districts captained his state in the Under-18 championships before making his AFL debut in Round 7, 2024. 

He has since tallied 27 career games, largely driven by a breakout 2025 campaign where he played 17 matches and became a mainstay of the defensive unit.

Hardeman had a tough start to the 2026 season after an ankle injury during North Melbourne's pre-season match against Melbourne.

He eventually made his return in Round 11’s win over the Gold Coast, before a concussion sidelined him again prior to earning a spot back in the senior team late in the year.

Head of football talent Brady Rawlings said securing Hardeman for the next two seasons is a big win for the club.

“Despite a frustrating season, Riley is clearly a very skilful player and we see him as a key part of the club’s future,” Rawlings said.

“He showed us what he’s capable of last year and with some more luck with his body, he’s bound to become a consistent player for us across half-back.

“Importantly he possesses some great leadership qualities and is well respected among the group, so we’re grateful he’s chosen to sign on.”
