Having defeated the reigning premiers in Round 1 last Saturday night, the Brisbane Lions will come into Sunday’s match with North Melbourne brimming with confidence.

Despite losing the first quarter six goals to one, the Lions hit their straps in the final three quarters, kicking 14 goals to just two.

It was the perfect start for Brisbane, who had so many people excited about its prospects this season following sustained improvement over recent years.

With former captain Dayne Beams leaving the club during the off-season, many raised doubts over the Lions’ ability to impact in 2019, however a bevy of experienced recruits quickly steadied the ship.

In Round 1, it was the new signings that stood tall against the Eagles in their season-opener, leading the side to an impressive victory.

Former Docker Lachie Neale swiftly proved why he was regarded as one of the most impressive signings over the off-season, collecting 29 disposals and winning five clearances.

Playing significant midfield minutes, the 25-year-old was impactful and appears to be the right man to fill Beams’ shoes.

Up forward it was ex-Cat Lincoln McCarthy who kicked a career-high four goals and partnered well with Charlie Cameron, who slotted three of his own.

Through the midfield, Jarryd Lyons had no trouble finding the ball, recording 26 disposals.

It is these experienced signings, in tandem with the young, emerging Lions that will cause the most grief for opponents this season.

Brisbane was a club once ravaged by young players wanting to leave, however in recent years, it has managed to retain its emerging stars and it is now enjoying the fruits of its labour.

Cam Rayner (23 games), Alex Witherden (31 games), Jarrod Berry (38 games) and Hugh McCluggage (41 games) are all young stars who were exposed to senior football at an early stage in their careers, and have now found their feet and starting to have a greater impact in matches.

Beyond that, forward Eric Hipwood (21-years-old) and defender Harris Andrews (22-years-old) are young stars who have surpassed the 50-game milestone, and are creating a strong spine that is likely to remain for years to come.

Another pre-season in the elite environment has only benefited these young Lions, and the ability to work and play alongside established stars of the game, will only fast-track their development.
