North Melbourne will take on Sydney on Friday, May 27 for the 2016 Indigenous Round.

The AFL today confirmed the Roos and Swans will open Indigenous Round on the Friday night, which will from 2016 onwards be named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls.

AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan said the AFL Commission had elected to name the round in honour of Sir Doug, who remains the only VFL/AFL player both to have been knighted and to have served as a state governor.

North will wear a newly designed Indigenous jumper in 2016, again designed by Indigenous artist Sarrita King, who has designed the jumper since 2014.

Sarrita grew up in the Northern Territory and is the daughter of famous artist, William King Jungala. King’s inspiration comes from her experiences growing up with her family and from her father who taught her about her Aboriginal heritage and the connection between everything in our world.
