Despite the hard-fought victory against the Western Bulldogs last weekend, there is certain to be changes at the selection table this week.

Billy Hartung has been ruled out of Sunday’s clash with the Bombers after injuring his hamstring, while Ben Jacobs will aim to make his return after presenting with concussion-like symptoms last week.

Although an undermanned North VFL side fell short of Footscray in the curtain-raiser, there were some standout performers who could earn a promotion to the senior team.

North Media takes a look at those in the mix for selection against Essendon.

Defenders

Ryan Clarke remains in contention for a senior recall after a trifecta of impressive games in the VFL. Collecting 22 disposals on Saturday, the 21-year-old has played an important role off half-back and through the midfield, with his versatility an attribute which could see him in the selection discussions.

Midfielders

Run-with midfielder Ben Jacobs is aiming for a return after being a late omission against the Bulldogs last weekend. If fit, there’s little doubt he will be named in the extended squad given the important and unique role he plays around the footy.

First-year player Will Walker has strung a number of impressive performances together in the VFL in recent weeks, with his latest outing highlighted by 19 disposals, six marks and as many tackles.

Luke Davies-Uniacke caught the eye of VFL coaches on the weekend, showing elite AFL qualities on a number of occasions, but could be made to bide his time in the VFL as he seeks greater consistency

Forwards

Cameron Zurhaar was withdrawn from North VFL’s clash on Sunday as senior coaches considered him as a potential replacement for Jacobs. In the opening half, the rookie collected 11 disposals and laid four tackles, and was on track for a best on ground performance.

Despite just the two goals, Nick Larkey’s competitiveness caught the eye of coaches, only adding to his impressive list of performances in 2018.
