Emma Humphries is eager to embrace a potential new role in the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos' side.

While the hard-running 24-year-old is used to patrolling the wing and half-back, she could be set for a move into attack in 2020.

"Through a wing is still something that is comfortable for me, and I know that role back to front, being a small forward ... that is pretty exciting for me," Humphries told The Advocate.

"I haven't had much exposure to the forward line (at any level), but I know it is important to have that secondary role so you are not shooting yourself in the foot where you only have one position, which I have always done (had two roles), but it is changing it up this year.

"I just want to play good footy, as I've missed so much of it ... I simply just want to get back out on the field."

Humphries said her involvement with grassroots football helped her through her recent shoulder injury.

Spending a year in injury rehabilitation, she took to watching her local club, Wynyard. The chance to step away from sitting on the sidelines at the VFLW and TSLW games she ultimately wasn't playing in, providing a welcome break.

Humphries' job as AFL Tasmania’s North-West community football and female talent development officer and as the state’s NAB League girls match-day coach also helping her to feel physically and mentally refreshed.

"Taking up the role with the NAB League girls gives you a different perspective on the game, and you do learn a couple of things that you wouldn't as a player, and you see the game (playing) as a coach as well,'' she added.

The Roos will take on Carlton in a practice match at Ikon Park this Saturday from 11am, before their season officially kicks off on February 8.
