The Werribee Tigers are still looking for their first win of the season after losing to Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday in round 2 of the VFL.

Despite the 46-point defeat, there were plenty of positives for North coach Brad Scott to take away from the match.

Watching from the outer along with assistant coaches Darren Crocker, Brett Allison and Shane Watson, Scott would have been particularly impressed with the output of Levi Greenwood (21 disposals) who tackled hard and showed no signs of the broken toe he sustained in the pre-season.

Ironically, Greenwood could be included in the Kangaroos’ side which is set to take on Hawthorn in Launceston on Sunday - it was at Aurora Stadium against Hawthorn last year that the South Australian made his mark and rejuvenated his AFL career.

While Greenwood impressed, it wasn’t enough to stop the Zebras’ onslaught. Werribee’s defenders were under siege early with a barrage of kicks directed into the opposition’s forward line.

Jamie MacMillan (11 disposals) played at full-back while Kangaroos’ rookie Alan Obst (7 disposals) also helped repel the Sandringham attack in the back-line.

Midfielder Ben Ross (18 disposals) eventually broke through for the visitors with a goal and the break in play allowed Majak Daw (8 disposals) onto the field in his first appearance at senior VFL level.

Daw was thrown straight into the ruck and despite giving away several centimeters in height to St Kilda listed players Ben McEvoy and Adam Pattison, the 18 year-old tallied 21 hit-outs.

Robbie Tarrant (10 disposals, 2 goals) was rewarded for a strong lead and his goal from 55 metres kept the Tigers within three points. Not to be outdone, Nathan O’Keefe (19 disposals, 1 goal) also unloaded from beyond the arc but Werribee’s poor disposal and decision making saw it go into the quarter-time huddle trailing by 17-points and down two players due to injury.

Daw was moved to full-forward in the second term and he had an immediate impact with a strong mark from an O’Keefe pass. But the Sudanese-born rookie was unable to covert and pushed the ball across the face of the goal.

O’Keefe had two chances to close the gap but his shots on goal were off target - one went out of bounds on the full and the other hit the post for a point.

Sandringham held onto a 25-point advantage and the third quarter began just as the second ended - O’Keefe missing a set-shot at goal.

A heated exchange between the sides resulted in two consecutive free kicks being awarded to the Zebras and forward Nick Sautner turned both into goals to extend his side’s lead to 28.

Sandringham opened the final term with a goal and the game was all but over. Robbie Tarrant worked hard for his second major of the day but continued to be frustrated by a lack of supply.

Werribee next play against the Gold Coast at home under lights on Saturday night.
