Ben Cunnington hard at it
Early in the match both sides are looking to gain the ascendency. North captain Andrew reads the ruck-work of Hamish McIntosh brilliantly. He rushes a kick forward. Aaron Edwards hits the ball hard across half-forward and dishes a handball to McIntosh running past. Under pressure, he pumps the ball deep into the attack where Todd Goldstein and Ryan Hargrave contest. Goldstein can only get one hand to it, but taps to the advantage of Ben Cunnington.
From the side, Liam Picken attacks the body hard, but Cunnington is strong; he bounces off his opponent and knocks him to the ground before re-gathering the ball and kicking a great goal.
Kieran Harper running goal
The Bulldogs are up by seven points mid-way through the second term. McIntosh wins a vital hit-out from the centre that lands in the path of Liam Anthony. Having already had a big impact, Anthony drives the ball long with an up-and-under kick. Up against two opponents, Goldstein does a good job to knock it to the front of the pack.
Enter Kieran Harper. After a quiet start to the game he picks it up cleverly, puts on the after-burners and slots the goal from 30 metres.
Lindsay Thomas goal
North trails by 25-points at the start of the third term. From the centre-bounce, Goldstein wins the tap to his own advantage, gathers the ball and handballs forward. Lindsay Thomas gathers nicely and handballs to Daniel Wells. Without a clear target up field he throws the ball on his boot inside 50. Andrew Swallow flies for the mark but is spoilt by Robert Murphy.
Meanwhile Thomas has worked forward to get to the drop of the ball. He breaks away from Dylan Addison, runs to within range and executes an ‘inside-out kick’ to perfection to bring the crowd to its feet.
Liam Anthony doubles up
The first: Already with 21 possessions to his name, Anthony receives a pass from Wells deep in the pocket about 40 metres out. Looking down field, he sees no other option but to shoot on goal. He lines up and kicks a wonderful goal.
The second: Wells receives a handball across half-back. He switches to Scott Thompson, who dishes to Cam Delaney. Unable to break the Bulldogs’ zone, the handball chain continues through Wells, Lindsay Thomas then Wells again. Drew Petrie works hard to provide an option further down field and mark on the lead. Thomas kept running and receives the handball before passing to Leigh Adams inside 50. The ball is judged touched, so he’s forced to get it to Liam Anthony under pressure. He throws it on the boot from 45m and rolls through a goal.
McKenzie mark and pass - Petrie mark and Goal
With the game still very much in the balance mid-way through the final term, North needs a lift. Substitute Brad McKenzie is yet to have an impact, but isn’t to be overwhelmed by being matched up on one of the Bulldogs’ best - Robert Murphy.
Brent Harvey streams through the middle and looks for options long to no prevail. McKenzie though pushes up to create a short lead and marks across half-forward. With composure, he sums up the situation, eyes Petrie charging out and puts it to his advantage. Daniel Cross shows courage to push in front of the pack, but Petrie flies over the top and marks strongly. With both Bulldogs’ players going to ground, he plays on and runs in to an open goal.
