Rhyce Shaw says North Melbourne will take the positives out of its performance against Carlton, as it looks to break its six-game losing streak.

The Roos’ coach was pleased with his team’s effort in the second and third quarters in particular, but admitted it was always going to be tough after conceding five first quarter goals.

"The start wasn't fantastic. Again, we got jumped and were on the back foot from there,” Shaw said after the seven-point loss.

"We showed for periods what we're all about. I was proud the guys got back on the horse and had a crack.

"In that middle part of the game, the second and third quarters, I think we showed what we're about and how we want to play footy.”

Shaw praised the performance of Jed Anderson, who was able to quell the influence of Patrick Cripps after quarter-time.

"I thought a couple of guys really stood up and got us going; they weren't standing for what we were dishing out and they made a change. It was a change for the better, and we got going,” he said.

"I think we showed across the board how we can play. It had a lot do with all three facets of the game - defence, offence and contested footy.

“I thought we used the ball really well, and I thought we put them (the Blues) under pressure throughout that period. We got results from that, we got reward.

“But inconsistency at the start of the game, it really hurts.

“It’s something to build on, and we’ve got to take that into next week.”

North was left to rue a missed opportunity, conceding a free kick on the three-quarter time which ultimately cost a shot on goal.

"I consider us a really hard-working side and really disciplined, but that just shows a lack of discipline in that moment and it's cost us," Shaw said.

"He (Jasper Pittard) was spoken to. We'll just leave it at that."

The Roos will look to bounce back next Saturday at Metricon Stadium.
