North Melbourne star Daniel Wells has urged Roo fans to support Mazda in the Targa Tassie endurance car rally next week.

Wells, a Mazda Ambassador, will be keeping a close eye on Mazda Australia’s two rally-prepared Mazda3 MPS production cars in the event.

The cars will be piloted by local ace Rick Bates and World Rally Championship competitor Alister McRae for the 2000km event, which starts next Tuesday (April 15th).

Wells, who drives a Mazda CX-7, hinted that he eventually might like to try his hand at a six-day endurance rally such as this.

“I am not sure if I could ever get a gig in a rally like this, but having seen the skill of the drivers and the speed, it is something that excites me,” Wells said.

However, Wells was quick to calm the nerves of any fans who would be concerned about him getting involved too soon.

“The fans can relax as I would never try anything like this until my playing days are over.”

Wells said he would follow the progress of the Mazda Australia entries in the event, which is renowned as one of the world’s most challenging tarmac endurance rallies, through the Mazda website.

“From Tuesday, our fans can track the team’s progress live through the links on the Mazda website,” Wells said.

“The website has profiles of the drivers and cars and will also be updated every evening with a daily race report, the latest video footage, team voice grabs and images of both cars from that day’s racing.”

The 2008 Targa Tasmania comprises 450kms spread across 39 tight and twisty closed-road stages.
