Unselected in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft, Jacob Edwards’ rise from a Victorian Metro League division four player to the number one selection of the mid-season draft has been frankly ridiculous.

At 202 centimetres tall, Edwards is definitely a project player for the club and needs to put some weight onto his wiry frame to be able to compete at the top level.

Capable of playing as a key forward or a ruck, Edwards’ early development looks set to come in the forward line as he adapts to the pace and power of senior football.

2021: Selected as the number one pick in the mid-season draft, Edwards’ impact at North Melbourne in his first six months was limited, with the young prospect prioritising his year 12 studies in the back half of the year.

Coming to training when available in school holidays, Edwards showed strong signs of integrating into the club’s young group when at Arden Street.

He made his first appearance in North colours in the Round 16 VFL clash with Port Melbourne, showing early signs of a positive forward partnership with Charlie Comben.

He finished the clash with a well-taken goal, converting from a tough angle in a strong breeze to put the game beyond doubt.

Development will be the aim for Edwards in his first full season at senior level, however he’s shown the craft and potential to push for a spot in North’s 22 throughout the year.
