Selected as a versatile key-position option in his draft year, Ben McKay has made his home at the heart of the North Melbourne defence in recent campaigns.

After four appearances in his first four seasons at the club, McKay burst onto the scene in 2020, locking down a spot in the back six alongside Robbie Tarrant, turning himself into one of the most skilled one-on-one defenders at the club.

Brought into the side in Round 7, 2020 against Richmond, ‘Buckets’ registered a career high 15 one per centers, and played 11 of the last 12 games of the season, making himself and undroppable piece of the defensive structure.

North Melbourne debut: Round 23, 2017

2021: With the availability issues that plagued North’s defence over the 2021 season, McKay’s ability to play every game over the course of the year is a testament to his exceptional consistency.

Often tasked with silencing the opposition’s most dangerous forwards, McKay’s performances against 2020 Coleman Medallist Tom Hawkins garnered praise from AFL circles across the competition.

After signing a two-year contract extension in June, he ended the season strongly to finish sixth in the Syd Barker Medal.
