AFLW R3 match report: Garner injury mars record-snapping win

An injury scare for superstar Jasmine Garner marred a record-shattering Kangaroos win over Walyalup

An injury for superstar Jasmine Garner marred a record-shattering Kangaroos win over Walyalup (Fremantle) at Fremantle Oval on Sunday.

Less than 24 hours after Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) set a new AFL mark of 108 points, the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos piled on 114, winning 18.6 (114) to 2.2 (14).

WALYALUP v KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

No AFLW team has previously won by the Kangaroos' 100-point margin.

The result extends the Roos' winning streak to 15 games, breaking a third AFLW record on the day.

    05:57

Garner capped a storming six-goal opening term by kicking a goal on the quarter-time siren, but limped off early in the second quarter after rolling her left ankle in an awkward fall.

She played no further part in the game and will wait on scans to determine the extent of the injury.

    04:41

The Kangaroos had 11 individual goalkickers in a one-sided contest, led by Irish third-gamer Blaithin Bogue, who kicked four, and spearhead Tahlia Randall, who kicked three.

    01:30

With Garner sidelined, Ash Riddell continued her excellent start to the season with a game-high 38 disposals and a goal.

The Kangaroos' ability to get the ball quickly to the outside through handballs was a standout feature on Sunday, particularly early as they built a 31-point lead at quarter time.

They dominated the second term in general play but could only manage one goal as several scoring chances were wasted and the Dockers' defence held up well.

Walyalup was able to find some midfield ascendency through the third quarter but could not convert that onto the scoreboard as the Kangaroos lifted their pressure around the ground to keep another clean sheet for the quarter.

Six goals to one in the final term ensured it would be a record-breaking day for the visitors.

    Garner concerns

The Roos will sweat on scans for superstar Jas Garner, who began as she left off last week, backing up her six-goal haul against Port Adelaide with a buzzer beater to end the first quarter. But her day ended abruptly after she landed awkwardly on her left ankle minutes into the second term. She was mothballed for the rest of the game, with the initial prognosis a rolled ankle. Garner has been central to the Roos' record 15-match winning streak, and the Kangaroos will be hoping further examination reveals nothing more serious.

    01:00

    One-way traffic

The goals tally in the second quarter read 1-0 in North Melbourne's favour, but it was among the most one-sided quarters you could see as the Kangaroos dominated field position and heaped pressure on the Dockers' defence. More than 90 per cent of the quarter was played in the visitors' front half and it was only their wayward kicking for goal that prevented the scoreboard from blowing out further. The Dockers didn't have a single inside 50 as they struggled to maintain possession, going goalless in a quarter for the first time this season.

    Next up

The Kangaroos will be favoured to continue their stunning winning run when they host Collingwood at Arden Street Oval on Sunday.
