VFL R11 match report: Midfielder stars but Roos fade late

Bailey Scott was impressive in North Melbourne’s first-time meeting against the Tasmania Devils, but the Roos couldn't contain the home side late, losing by 14 points in a tight battle.

The Kangaroos led at every break throughout the clash but were overpowered in the final term, conceding eight goals.

Oliver Griffin and Lachy Brewer both showed flashes in their debuts for the club’s reserves side, with Griffin kicking one major from his eight touches.

The final score at North Hobart Oval saw the Roos fall to the Devils 15.14 (104) to 13.12 (90).

    Player watch

Bailey Scott racked up 27 possessions (11 contested) and was influential around the ground as one of the Kangaroos' best. He also recorded seven intercepts as well as five inside 50s.

Josh Goater (20 disposals, seven marks, seven rebound 50s) excelled in the backline, using his speed and explosiveness to send the Roos into attack.

His best moment was in the third quarter, when he saved a certain goal on the goal line by getting a hand to the ball in a great defensive effort.

Veteran defender Aidan Corr (13 disposals, five rebound 50s) was a rock in defence, taking the responsibility of matching up against Tasmania sharpshooter Hugh Dixon.

Speedster Robert Hansen jnr (25 disposals, one goal) continued his strong form in Hobart. His one goal came in the last quarter as he took advantage of the stand rule to take off and get onto his left boot on the run.

On return from injury, Zac Banch (18 disposals, four marks) had a great impact, using his run-and-carry to distribute the ball. He was also good at getting the ball out of the contest, notching four clearances.

Mid-season draftee Oliver Griffin (eight disposals, one goal) showed off his strengths, using his excellent marking and booming kick to impact.

Category B rookie Lachy Brewer (five disposals, three intercepts) also showed good signs in his backline role.

Oliver Lowe (18 disposals, four goals) was the Roos’ best scoring avenue, and midfielder Darcy Macpherson (30 disposals, seven tackles) was prolific once again.

    What the coach said

VFL coach Adam Marcon on the result: "Really disappointed with our last quarter today, you're not going to win too many games of footy giving up eight goals in the last term.

"I was really pleased with the first three quarters and thought we put ourselves in a good spot to run out the game, but unfortunately we weren’t able to do that."

On playing in Tasmania: "It's great exposure for our players playing in front of a VFL finals type of atmosphere. It’s probably the biggest crowd we’ll play in front of all year, so very happy with the opportunity for our boys to get exposed to those sorts of crowds, so we’ll take great learnings out of it."

On Josh Goater: "Goater gave us some good looks behind the ball, but the most important thing is getting some continuity with his body and having him out there. Great for him to be playing some good footy for us, especially today."

On the debutants: "I thought Brewer was quite solid behind the ball today. They have a couple of really good key forwards, and I thought he played his role really well.

"Griffin was able to hit the scoreboard and brought the ball to ground for us very well, so I thought they both had a good impact for their first game."
