Brad Scott was more than pleased with the efforts of his players on Sunday against Carlton but heading into round one, he’ll take plenty of solace from the fact he boasts a squad with significant midfield depth.

Missing Sam Gibson who watched from the sidelines as an emergency, Jack Ziebell, Ben Speight, Levi Greenwood and Cruize Garlett, the Roos were solid against the likes of Marc Murphy and Chris Judd. Ben Cunnington, Ryan Bastinac, Andrew Swallow, Daniel Wells, Liam Anthony and Brent Harvey all performed well throughout the day and have ensured the club is well placed heading into the opening match of the year against Essendon.

A day earlier, Greenwood and Garlett held their heads high for North Ballarat despite a comprehensive defeat at the hands of a Bendigo team boasting 16 Essendon listed players.

Omitted from the side to take on the Blues, Greenwood racked up 24 possessions, 10 of those contested and booted a goal, while Garlett had 22 disposals and cleared the ball from the centre on five occasions.

It’s a rare luxury in the lead-up to March 31st, and makes it harder for Scott to narrow the squad to just 22.
