The AFL's most coveted individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, will be awarded to the League's best and fairest player of the season on Sunday night.

Although 2022 wasn't the type of season that will engender a medal-winning Roo, the club still had several standouts that are likely to poll well and add to their career Brownlow vote tallies which is always a significant feat.

North Media takes a look at the four Kangaroos that could top the club's 2022 count.

Luke Davies-Uniacke

Games: 21
Goals: 9

It's no secret now that Luke Davies-Uniacke exploded in 2022 and took his game to another level.

With Ben Cunnington sidelined for almost all of the season, 'LDU' relished a role that saw him take on more responsibility around the ground.

The midfielder's deft work around stoppages coupled with his ability to burst out of traffic with intent had the excitement amongst North fans growing by the week.

Stats: 24.9 disposals, 12.7 kicks, 12.1 handballs, 5.3 clearances, 4.4 tackles, 5 inside-50s, 4.3 marks per game.

Career Brownlow votes: 7

Key games

Round 17: Davies-Uniacke had a career-best day on the hallowed turf of the MCG against Collingwood. Although the result got away from North in the end, our number nine surely has the three votes sealed up after gathering 33 touches, 14 inside-50s, 12 clearances and 11 tackles.

Round 22: Despite Adelaide kicking away in the final term to record a 29-point win over the Roos, 'LDU' continued to emerge as a star midfielder of the League. He left Adelaide Oval with 37 disposals, 11 clearances, 10 inside-50s and one goal to his name.

Jy Simpkin

Games: 21
Goals: 7

The well-deserved back-to-back Syd Barker Medallist was an ever-reliable presence in North's midfield this year and was often a shining light throughout a tough season.

Simpkin composed a tremendous individual campaign in his second year as a co-vice-captain, polling 130 votes in the best and fairest count and averaging 26.6 touches a game.

Working in tandem with Davies-Uniacke in the middle, Simpkin was a constant force at the coalface but also possessed the ability to get damaging on the outside.

If he isn't already, the midfielder definitely took another step towards being one of the AFL's best onballers.

Stats: 26.6 disposals, 15.4 kicks, 11.2 handballs, 5.3 clearances, 4.5 tackles, 4.7 inside-50s, 3.4 marks per game.

Career Brownlow votes: 10

Key games

Round 20: A valiant effort in the midfield saw Simpkin come away with a career-high 41 disposals against Essendon. As impressive as his performance was, it might not be enough for best on grounds honours considering the impact Jake Stringer (five goals) and Zach Merrett (38 disposals, 10 tackles, one goal) had on the contest.

Round 18: The three votes may be reserved for a particular forward in this case, but Simpkin's 34-disposal and one-goal game against Richmond was as important as they come. North Melbourne's second win of 2022 should see it take home all six votes, but how many does the number 12 add to his tally?

Todd Goldstein

Games: 22
Goals: 16

The ruckman was as smooth-moving as ever in his 16th season in the AFL, coming away with a fourth-place finish in the Syd Barker Medal count.

With the strong development of Tristan Xerri and the addition of Callum Coleman-Jones from Richmond, Goldstein spent more time in the forward line where slotted 16 goals for the campaign – his most since 2016 (20).

He may not have any sure-fire three-vote games under his belt this year, but his amazing consistency over the course of full seasons has regularly seen him poll well in Brownlow Medal counts, so look out for Goldy's name on Sunday night.

Stats: 13 disposals, 24 hitouts, 3.3 clearances, 2.6 marks per game

Career Brownlow votes: 71

Key games

Round 11: Up against a dynamic St Kilda duo consisting of Paddy Ryder and Rowan Marshall in Round 11, the veteran shone. The 53-point loss will hurt his chances of polling maximum votes, but his two-goal, 30-hitout and 16-disposal performance could see him pinch one.

Round 13: Two weeks later, Goldstein stood out again from a North Melbourne perspective with 33 hitouts, four clearances, 13 disposals and two goals against the Giants. He and Xerri combined for 60 hitouts as well but going down by a sizeable margin will again make it difficult for the 33-year-old to poll.

Nick Larkey

Ineligible - Suspension: Round 7

Games: 20
Goals: 38

Although the club's spearhead was suspended for a Round 7 incident, he remains a chance to top the club's count after an excellent 38-goal season.

Opportunities to score were hard to come by for large portions of 2022, but Larkey was often able to get the better of his defender and convert in front of goal at an efficient rate.

Stats: 9.7 disposals, 3.8 marks per game

Career Brownlow votes: 3

Key games

Round 2: The key forward helped deliver the club's first win of 2022 with a scintillating six-goal outing against the Eagles. Hugh Greenwood and Jack Ziebell are chances for best on ground here as well, but with 16 disposals and seven marks along with the aforementioned bag of goals, it's more than reasonable to think that the three votes leave with Larkey.

Round 21: Larkey went one better than Round 2 at the pointy end of the season with seven goals against Sydney. After failing to hit the scoreboard in Rounds 18 and 20, the forward proved too much for Tom McCartin and managed to equal his career-high from Round 19, 2021.

Three-vote lock

Round 18's fixture against the Tigers was made for a King. A King of Marvel.

A week on from a gallant team performance against Collingwood, Leigh Adams' first game in charge as caretaker coach saw the Roos burst out of the blocks and ultimately record a pulsating four-point win over Richmond.

The victory saw North snap its 14-game losing streak with raging bull Cam Zurhaar having an evening to remember.

While Richmond struggled to convert shots at their end throughout the match, Zurhaar was just about centimetre perfect at the other, finishing the game with six goals and one behind.

The most memorable of the bag came at the death though as a textbook Todd Goldstein tap landed straight in the path of the lurking forward who went on to boot the go-ahead goal and eventual match-winner.
