The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have informed Sophie Abbatangelo and Grace Matser that they will not be offered contracts beyond this season.

Abbatangelo joined North Melbourne from Melbourne Uni in 2018 ahead of the club’s entry into the AFLW competition.

The 32-year-old has been a mainstay of the Kangaroos forward line over five seasons, playing 42 games and kicking 29 goals for the club. Her on-field flare saw her become a fan favourite over her time at Arden St.

Matser, 19, joined the Kangaroos in the most recent AFLW draft from Collingwood’s VFLW program.

The young ruck was selected as an addition to the club’s tall stocks. Matser was yet to make her AFLW debut.

“We thank Sophie and Grace for their contributions to our club, these decisions are never easy or taken lightly,” head of AFLW Nathan Hrovat said.

“A member of our inaugural AFLW team, Sophie and her family have played a big part of the club’s AFLW journey and we thank them for their contribution.

“Whilst with us for only a short time, Grace demonstrated a great attitude and commitment to her football. We wish Grace all the best for her future.”
