The conditions were wet, wild and windy but it didn’t stop North Melbourne representatives lining up for the club’s VFL affiliate North Ballarat on Saturday at Arden Street.

Back-to-back matches were played as the temperatures plummeted and the rain speared into the ground. With puddles forming all over, players found the going extremely tough and slippery. Perhaps the only player who felt at home with the muddy surface was Irishman Conor Meredith who impressed playing down back.

With the lights switched on Nathan O’Keefe continued to show signs of improvement along with Marcus White and Leigh Adams while Alan Obst used his size and strength to dominate in the ruck

It was far from a happy return for former Kangaroo champion Shannon Grant who coached Frankston’s senior side later in the afternoon. Not only did he suffer a loss, but a decision to take coaching to new heights by climbing onto a large container situated on the construction site backfired. While his opposite initially envied the strategic move, it eventually proved disastrous as the clouds rolled in and rain began pouring down once again. Much to his credit, a soaking wet Grant stood firm and persisted with the position until the quarter-time siren sounded.

He wasn’t the only one who was a little worse for wear, Levi Greenwood had the markings of a hard day at the office smeared all over his face while Aaron Edwards was forced to work overtime in order to earn a kick.

Much of the attention was on Daniel Harris and Corey Jones as the pair attempts to break back into the North Melbourne side. While it was hard to impress with skills, both had plenty of the ball and were instrumental in securing the win.

Another standout was Nathan Grima. The defender was solid and impassable down back and has definitely shown his worth after being elevated from the rookie list.
