Forward Alice O'Loughlin will be sidelined after sustaining a lacerated liver during Saturday's 53-point win over Carlton.

O'Loughlin was admitted to hospital following the match after experiencing pain and discomfort and is expected to be discharged on Tuesday.

North Melbourne general manager of women's football Erin Lorenzini confirmed the injury is a rare one.

"This is an unusual injury, and we haven't yet been able to confirm at what stage of the game the injury was sustained," Lorenzini said.

"Alice's well-being is our top priority. She's in good hands, feeling better, and the club is providing her with our full support but a timeline on her return is yet to be determined."

The club will provide an update on O'Loughlin's progress as more information becomes available.
