With the state league representative clash between the VFL and SANFL taking place in South Australia, North Melbourne's reserves side met the AFL Academy in a Sunday hitout at Arden Street Oval.

The Roos were organised and efficient en route to a 20.6 (126) to 7.13 (55) win over the Academy.

With young forward Lachy Dovaston claiming the headlines, here are four talking points from the contest.

1. Dovaston hits Academy for six

First-year player Dovaston, who played the first three AFL games this season, showed his elite promise by kicking six goals from 20 disposals.

"I thought his finishing and connection inside 50 was elite," VFL coach Adam Marcon said.

"He’s just really dangerous around goal as we know. He was very clean at ground level and as able to not only get a look on the scoreboard but give a few off, too, so it was a really pleasing day out for ‘Dovva’."

2. Fisher and Harvey are knocking on the door

Zac Fisher and Cooper Harvey could be on the AFL selection radar heading into Round 6 after both putting in strong shifts.

Fisher notched 35 touches and two goals, while Harvey collected nine marks and 26 disposals.

“Both of them for the most part were set up really well behind the ball, and ‘Fish’ played a bit on the wing as well,” Marcon said.

“They were both able to beat their man and then provide some really strong offence for us from there, as they always do.”

3. The talls are coming along

While Dovaston sunk six, Matt Whitlock served as the main tall target inside forward 50.

The second-year Roo took nine grabs and kicked four goals of his own to push his case for a call-up.

"'Whitters' is progressing really well," Marcon said.

“We can really see the development in his game. He’s really crafty. He was able to put himself in the contest and show his aerial ability with some good marks. He was really impressive."

Wil Dawson and Taylor Goad shared ruck duties, each battling the Academy’s 202cm ruckman Harry Van Hattum as they look to put their names in the mix for the AFL side’s Round 6 game against Richmond.

“They both had positive games,” Marcon said.

“Goady’s continuing to build back to full fitness post-ankle injury and I thought he had a strong game.

“He worked into the game really well and his clearance work and follow-up were real highlights.

"'Shotty' (Dawson) was really positive. His tackling and his intent in the contest is really strong and he gets the ball going our way.

“Both of them stood up yesterday against the AFL Academy talls who were really impressive in their own right."

4. George continues to grow

Brayden George backed up his four first-quarter goals in the VFL win against Carlton on Good Friday with three goals against the Academy, to keep his name in the mix for an AFL debut.

“Over the last couple of weeks in particular we’ve seen some good signs of growth from ‘Sausage’,” Marcon said.

“His ability to get himself into the game with his pressure and his tackling is a key indicator of how he's going. He was able to put on some good pressure and get some good looks on goal on the back of it.”
