North Melbourne can confirm Sam Gibson will not be offered a new contract for 2018.

Originally snared by Hawthorn in 2006, the hard running midfielder was delisted but remained intent on playing at the elite level and was eventually handed a second chance by North several years later.

A mature age recruit, he kick started his AFL career at the age of 25 after being picked up by the Roos in the 2011 Rookie Draft with pick 63.

He went on to play 130 consecutive games after making his debut in 2012.

North coach Brad Scott described Gibson and his six-year stint at Arden St in glowing terms.

“Sam is without question, one of the most determined and dedicated players going around,” Scott told NMFC.com.au.

“It’s a credit to him that he was able to begin his career late, as a 25-year old rookie, and become an integral player at the elite level for us.

“His durability, leadership, strength of character and persistence has all helped create one of the truly great and inspirational football stories.

“Other mature age players and AFL aspirants should look at Sam’s journey and take a lot of confidence from it.

“Sam has been a pleasure to coach and will he will be missed.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we wish Sam, Jade and Sebastian all the best for the next chapter.”
