The Carlton legend and now VFL commentator on the ABC praised the North Melbourne listed midfielder during the Roosters’ heavy 52-point loss to Williamstown at Eureka Stadium, Ballarat.
"He’s been one of North Ballarat’s best today and is one player that can hold his head high,” Rhys-Jones said.
Garlett accumulated 15 touches to half-time and continued to win his own footy in the final two quarters finishing the day with a team-high 32.
He also managed to push forward and kick a snap goal late in the game to go along with eight clearances and four tackles.
North Ballarat’s roller coaster season is a concern, but there were plenty of positives for the affiliated Kangaroos with their developing players showing plenty of upside.
2011 draftee Brad McKenzie was superb throughout the afternoon displaying his effective left-boot on several occasions. Despite missing his three set shots on goal, he had plenty to smile about after 21 possessions.
Young ruckman Ben Mabon just keeps giving despite surrendering height and weight advantages to his opposition week in week out.
Playing in familiar territory, Mabon had an impressive 34 hit-outs and 18 disposals while fellow local Cam Richardson also ended with 18 touches.
Aaron Black had a frustrating day in front of goal. He presented well but let himself down with inaccurate kicking. Two of his shots hit the post and he registered two goals and four behinds.
Gavin Urquhart’s 21 possessions weren’t as effective as he would’ve liked while Max Warren had a quiet day with nine disposals and two spoils as he builds on all areas of his game.
Meanwhile Cam Delaney, left out of the North Melbourne side after making his debut against GWS, was solid in defence but injured his hip in early stages of the game.
