A member of North Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy, Tarryn Thomas was selected with pick 8 in the 2018 National Draft, when the Roos matched Adelaide’s bid on the talented midfield/forward.

After an impressive pre-season, Thomas found himself in the mix for selection early on, and when Trent Dumont withdrew late ahead of the Round 2 clash with Brisbane, he got his chance.

The number 26 kicked a fine goal on debut, and would go on to play another 19 games in his first year, establishing himself in the Roos’ new-look forward line.

Exceptionally clean with the ball in hand, Thomas has been billed to have a big future in the midfield as his tank, and body mature. This was evidenced later in the season, as the youngster attended centre bounces on occasion.

Thomas’ 12-disposal, 2-goal outing in Round 12 earned him a NAB Rising Star nomination.

Although it wasn’t the most dominant rookie performance of the year, Thomas’ consistent ability to impact games endeared himself to fans, who are understandably excited about what the future holds.

What the coach said

“I don’t think I’ve seen a cleaner pair of hands in a first-year player than the ones Tarryn Thomas has.

“His ability to take the ball first time, absorb pressure and then create for his teammates is second to none.

“I think Tarryn could play anywhere, literally anywhere. But, I do think he could end up in the midfield when his body matures a bit more.” - Rhyce Shaw

What he said

"Pre-season helped and put me in good stead, and then I was lucky enough to play in most games.

"As I got more games under my belt, I started to feel more comfortable. When I started, I wasn’t sure if I was in or not.

"We have a really tight group here, which is exciting."
