It was only 90 minutes before the game Sam Durdin found out he’d be making his AFL return, but the 22-year-old was ready and raring to go.

“It was a late call-up, but being in the squad you’ve always got to be prepared to play,” Durdin told North Media.

“Unfortunately, Scotty (Thompson) came out, but that was a good opportunity for me. I had a game in the VFL last week so I was ready to go.”

Playing mainly on Esava Ratugolea, the key-defender kept his opponent quiet, and took four important marks himself.

After such a long time on the sidelines with a finger injury, Durdin knew it would take a little while to adapt to the pace.

“I’ll be better for it,” he said.

“AFL footy is very tough, physically and mentally, so today was a good little stint for me, and hopefully I can build from that.”

Durdin was impressed with the Kangaroos’ ability to compete with the top-of-the-table Cats.

Although the Roos went down by 24 points in the end, the margin could have been much smaller, but for some inaccurate kicking.

“There were some pretty positive signs, but we obviously didn’t get the result which is disappointing,” Durdin said.

“I think we were pretty competitive, and scoring shots wise, on another day we kick a winning score there.

“I think there was plenty to hold our heads up high about, but plenty of work to do at the same time.

“The first few weeks were tough to watch when we weren’t at our best, but to match it and be competitive with Geelong, who are a quality side, was great.”
