Last week The Huddle held the inaugural Multicultural Primary Schools Cup at Princes Park. Students from several local schools in the North Melbourne area came together to battle it out and compete for the perpetual Kangaroos Cup.

North Melbourne, Flemington, St Michaels and Kensington all took part in the event and it was a fun-filled day with more than 200 children in attendance.

GM of the Huddle Dr Sonja Hood said the Multicultural Primary Schools Cup is a great way to integrate students from many different cultural backgrounds, some of whom are learning to play Australian Rules Football for the first time.

“Sport has a wonderful effect on people, especially children. A lot of the students participating in this cup weren’t born in Australia and it can be hard for them to feel at home in a new country, new school and new culture,” Dr Hood told kangaroos.com.au.

“Events like this one help to build a greater connection between the students and their teammates as they work together in sport. Football creates a sense of belonging which can be hard to manufacture in any other way.”

Kensington Primary was the winner of the boys division and Flemington Primary School took out the major prize for the girls.

Both schools will represent the North Melbourne Football Club at the state finals at Whitten Oval later this year in term four.

The students showed extremely impressive sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout the day and are already looking forward to the next challenge.

The Huddle would like to thank SEDA and AFL Victoria for assisting with the day and making the first ever Multicultural Primary Schools Cup a huge success.
