With such a big game on Friday night, NMFC Playbook takes a look back at the last time North and Carlton met and a scan through the numbers in that game reveals a fascinating scenario.
In 2012 North could be considered a damaging outside team, as its run and carry has hurt its opponents.
In Round 19, 2011 however, it was the opposite. North had 12 more clearances and 20 more tackles than the Blues and was more impressive in and around the contest. But the Kangaroos were most damaging when they were able to spread quickly and break Carlton open with old fashioned hard running.
In the first quarter North kicked three goals in as many minutes.
Play one
Daniel Wells kicks-out after a Carlton behind to Brent Harvey in space.

Harvey marks and spots Aaron Edwards on the half-forward line, also in space. With just two possessions, the ball has transferred from the defensive goalsquare to the half-forward line.
The work of Cam Pedersen caps a fine play. Identifying the space between Edwards and the goals, Pedersen begins to run hard to create a third option. Edwards delivers a centimetre-perfect pass to the running Pedersen who only has to mark and stroll into an open goal.

Play two
From a stoppage on the edge of the centre square, Ryan Bastinac takes possession. Initially there is nowhere for Bastinac to go.

With Cunnington marking the awkward ball on the 50, the final piece of the play falls into place. Due to Carlton’s numbers still behind the ball, North has created an overlap. Cunnington and Harvey outnumber the Blues' only player in the vicinity, Chris Yarran.
Through no fault of his own, Yarran is caught between a rock and a hard place thanks to North's run.
