AFL footballers mightn’t be known for their decorum or social graces, but North Melbourne’s first-year players were transformed into the perfect gentlemen on Wednesday at an etiquette boot camp.

Under the watchful eye of assistant coaches Darren Crocker, Brett Allison, Shane Watson and vice-captain Jack Ziebell, the club’s newest additions sat down to a two-course meal at Cassa & Bottega to learn everything from which knife and fork goes where, to making a good first impression.

“We talked about what not to do when you’re out to dinner, like licking your knife, sculling your drink or talking with your mouth full,” Good Manners Company principal Anna Musson joked.

“The players also learnt how to conduct themselves in meetings and how to enter a room for a function and other important social pleasantries.”

Despite a lot of laughs over the course of the evening, the players were competitive as always, working hard to be the most chivalrous Kangaroo in the room.

“I was really impressed by the younger players and the way they applied the knowledge straight away in the session,” Musson added.

“Ideally these are things which will give the players more confidence in areas outside of football and will help them further their careers.”

The Good Manners Company has worked with sporting clubs from the AFL, NRL and rugby union.
