Youngsters shine in Tiger defeat
The Werribee Tigers are languishing in 11th position on the VFL ladder after their winning run came to an end against Williamstown on Sunday.
Werribee came out firing in the early part of the game, going into the first break with a five point lead. But it didn't take long for the ascendency to swing, the Seagulls booting away in the second quarter with five goals to two to take a 16 point lead at the main change.
There were plenty of chances for the Tigers to work their way back into the match in the premiership quarter, but they were unable to capitalise on 11 scoring shots, kicking themselves out of the game with eight behinds for the term; in comparison Williamstown made the most of its opportunities with eight goals from ten scoring shots.
The North Melbourne affiliate fought hard in the last quarter, but its opponents stretched the final margin to 59 points as it kicked eight goals to five.
Western Bulldogs' ruckmen Wade Skipper took full advantage in the absence of North Melbourne's Todd Goldstein, the big man kicking four goals and claiming best on ground honours for his team.
Former Hawthorn player Brett Johnson was also in the best for the Seagulls, while Dylan Addison put his hand up for selection for the Bulldogs with a solid performance.
Nathan Thompson was the shining light for the Tigers. In a colossal effort, the big forward kicked eight of Werribee's 14 goals.
Leigh Adams and Levi Greenwood were the best of North Melbourne's aligned players.
Adams racked up 25 possessions and booted a handy goal to once again send a message to the Kangaroos' selectors, while Greenwood got his hands on the ball regularly through the midfield and half back, grabbing 26 possessions and seven clearances.
Rookie Alan Obst was also in the best Werribee, he picked up 23 possessions and took 11 marks, while Sam Wright continued on his road to a senior return with 14 disposals.
It doesn't get any easier for the Tigers next week as they take on the third placed Port Melbourne. The Borough is coming off a 49 point win against Sandringham.
North Ballarat had the bye this week, but will also face a tough challenge to regain top spot, coming up against the Box Hill Hawks at City Oval on Saturday afternoon.
