North Melbourne players have embraced new technology in order to fast track their recovery after games and seek a competitive edge over their opponents.
Ten players have the ability to use special portable Bodyflow® electrotherapy units in the comfort of their own homes in order to speed up their rehabilitation process.
Bodyflow® is a electrotherapy technique that specifically targets smooth muscle found within veins, arteries and lymphatics. The treatment helps speed up fluid drainage and increases blood flow circulation.
Bodyflow® therapy can also enhance sports performance by promoting the drainage of toxins through stimulation of the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems thereby helping athletes to recover faster.
“The players simply attach the electrodes to the affected area of their body and a mild electrical stimulus is applied,” North’s director of sports science and rehabilitation Peter Mulkearns told kangaroos.com.au.
“It great that we can give a Bodyflow® unit to a player and know that he is able to do some extra recovery in his lounge room or in front of the television.”
Targeted players are encouraged to use the units at least twice a day.
“We try and give the units to the players who have a high workload throughout the week,” Mulkearns added.
“The units are used as an adjunct to the extensive recovery practices and monitoring systems already employed by the players. They’re all required to complete regular questionnaires which enable us to get a clear understanding of where they’re at in terms of fitness and health.
This type of technology is being used throughout the world in all sports to aid recovery and our players have been very pleased with the results so far.”
