He's only just walked through the doors at Aegis Park, but draftee Tom Curran can already sense a bright future at North Melbourne.

"It's an awesome club, good list... young list and promising times ahead so it's really exciting," Curran told kangaroos.com.au.

The 18 year-old key-position player was selected with North's second pick on Thursday night and has quickly embraced his new home.

"I'm settling in well. The players are so welcoming so they make it easy for us.

"Brad (McKenzie) and I are starting to get stuck into the weights and things now so the novelty of getting drafted is sort of out the window."

Curran's ambitions of impressing on the training track have been put on hold temporarily as he recovers from a foot injury.

"After the Grand Final (TAC Cup) I pulled up sore and thought something was wrong. I had scans after and there was a little crack in my foot. Hopefully over Christmas I'll be able to start running and be right to go by the start of next year."

That slight hurdle aside, the former Oakleigh Charger is eager to learn and is looking no further than the vice-captain for advice.

"Drew Petrie... his work ethic is amazing. I think if I had him as a role model I couldn't have much better."

Petrie knows only too well how to approach a foot injury and will give the youngster plenty of advice on how to make a full recovery.

Curran spent much of his junior career as a forward, but a move to defence this season proved fruitful.

Now it's just a matter of doing everything right in his recovery to get back and live out his dream alongside fellow draftee McKenzie.

"I was watching him (McKenzie) out there yesterday and wanted to be out there with him. I reckon we'll drive each other pretty well. It'll be good a little rivalry there."
