YOUNG Kangaroos forward Lindsay Thomas lists Daniel Wells as the player he most tries to model his game on.
After Wells' resilient round two performance, where he responded admirably to days of criticism for his lacklustre outing in the Kangaroos' opening match against Essendon, it's no wonder Thomas wants to emulate the player he shares a Port Lincoln bond with.
"I wanted to be like 'Wellsy' growing up," he told kangaroos.com.au after the club's 41-point win over Richmond.
"I watched him when I grew up, and he's from where I'm originally from. The things he does are pretty exciting.
"There's not too many other players that can do the things he can do. He's been helping me out, talking to me, and if I can do those one percenters like him, I should be alright."
While the 20-year-old also names Michael Long, Gavin Wanganeen and Byron Pickett as players he admired as a youngster, Thomas has the utmost respect for Wells, particularly after his 24-possession performance against the Tigers.
"He came out and let his actions do all the talking," Thomas said.
"It's a confidence booster for him, so hopefully he can come out next week and do the same."
Thomas is another who will be hoping solid form continues to come his way in round three. After kicking three goals against the Bombers and one on Sunday, his promising talent shown last year has only improved throughout the summer months.
"I had a good pre-season, and obviously a good year last year, so to have a good pre-season this year has been exciting," he said.
"I haven't cemented my spot yet, but every week I just go out with an intention to lay tackles and play for the team.
"I feel really comfortable at North Melbourne. It's a really good club and there's good support from the boys, so I'm pretty happy here."
Thomas, along with fellow small forward Matt Campbell, has proved to be a handy inclusion for the Kangaroos, with their speed complementing the power forwards in the line-up.
"At training, we practice that if the big blokes, like 'Thommo' [Nathan Thompson] and 'Jonesy' [Corey Jones] and Aaron Edwards can't mark it and it comes to the ground, it's me and Matty Campbell's job to try and support them," he said.
"That's our job. If we can do that each week and the team wins, we're pretty happy.
"When the team wins, it's a good result for myself and Matt. He did alright today as well, so I'm pretty pleased."
Thomas, having played half a home-and-away season in his debut year, is hoping to take his career another step forward in 2008.
"Last year, I played 12 games and I want to try and play every game this year and keep my spot in the side," he said.
"At the moment, I'm just working on chasing and tackling and doing things for team, and I think I've improved on that."
