Hamstring injury floors Campbell
North Melbourne forward Matt Campbell will miss round one after injuring his hamstring against the Bulldogs on the weekend
Campbell was chasing Bulldog Eastern Wood just before half-time when he felt instant pain in his right hamstring, the same one that troubled him during 2009.
The 24-year-old said he was uncertain how long he would have to wait before he could get back into the North Melbourne side.
"I'm not too sure, the physios can't really give a timeframe for it. I've just got to wait and see how the hamstring heals over the week and then we should be able to know about it by Friday," he said.
"It's hard to describe a hamstring, a lot of people say it's like being shot but I've never been shot so I can't compare them. It was pretty painful."
Campbell is the latest to join North Melbourne's growing injury list.
Levi Greenwood, Hamish McIntosh, Nathan Grima, Ben Cunnington, Ryan Bastinac and Lachlan Hansen have all missed parts of the pre-season but North Melbourne football manager Donald McDonald said the injury toll was not overly concerning for the team.
"The weekend was a real positive one for us," McDonald said. "There has been a lot of conjecture about how many injuries we've got but we're not overly concerned with it."
"Brad (coach Brad Scott) has been quoted as saying it is a terrific opportunity for some of the guys to come in and get some exposure. I think we've been able to find a few players.
"Over the weekend, Cam Richardson was terrific. He might not have gotten a game if Greenwood and Bastinac were available.
"Overall, we feel going into round one, we are going to have a really good, strong, fit team to put on the park against West Coast."
Grima is a chance to play for Werribee against North Ballarat in a VFL practice match this week.
McDonald said there was no need for a review into the medical team after the spate of off-season injuries.
"I just think we've been stiff. If you have a look at it, we've probably had five or six injuries that have been carry overs from the previous year," he said.
"The only soft tissue [injury] we've had has been Matty Campbell's injury, from the weekend."
Matt Campbell is a $213,900 forward in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
