McMahon: No excuses
Scott McMahon has played his fair share of games at Skilled Stadium throughout his six years at North Melbourne but this week he says his team's challenge is gr
Victory over the Kangaroos on Saturday will give Geelong a record 25th straight win at home.
24 year-old McMahon sat down with kangaroos.com.au on Wednesday and spoke about what makes Geelong such a formidable force at 'The Cattery'.
“They just know the ground so well at Skilled Stadium. I guess they know the wind and they’re aware of which pockets to stay out of."
As always, a hostile environment will confront the Kangaroos as they venture down the highway with a full house expected, but McMahon says there's no room for excuses for the boys from Aegis Park.
“We’ve had two trips to Perth already this season so we won’t use the opposition’s home ground advantage as an excuse.
“You just need to block out the crowd and the distractions and concentrate on getting the job done. It’s not just about their home crowd, more importantly they’re just a really good side.”
Coming up against an intimidating mix of experience and youth, McMahon agrees there's a need to be super competitive right from the opening bounce.
“Todd Goldstein will have the challenge of playing against Brad Ottens and our midfielders will be crucial in making an impact from the start of the match."
McMahon's challenge in defence can't be underestimated either, with Geelong having averaged 20 goals a game in the last six meetings between the two sides.
“In the past few years I’ve played on Steve Johnson and Matthew Stokes, I could get any of the mid-sized small forwards."
With only one win on the board compared to Geelong’s five, it’s obvious North Melbourne has some fierce competition awaiting it, but McMahon says plenty of positives can be drawn from the club's first five games of the season.
“Our inside 50s have been impressive and we’ve shown signs that we can compete. Obviously we need to work hard to convert better and kick more goals...that’s a problem we need to strengthen.
“We need a bit more poise in front of goal and to finish off all our hard work.
“We need to get on top of them. It will be a tough day but hopefully we can get over the line.”
