Nathan Grima is one step closer to being declared ready for AFL after a promising hit-out for Werribee against North Ballarat in a VFL practice match.

The key defender played at centre-half back and full back for about 80 per cent of the total game time.

"It was good to get through the match and I felt symptom free out there which was great," Grima told kangaroos.com.au on Saturday after stepping off the Eureka Stadium surface.

"I'm obviously not at the level I'd like to be but it's another box ticked as far as my rehabilitation and comeback goes."

Grima had surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back during the pre-season and hasn't been able to train for months. In the last few weeks however, his recovery has been fast tracked due to his dedication and determination to play in round one.

"I'm not sure if I will be picked to play against the Eagles but I'm doing everything I can to throw my name in the mix," Grima added.

Regarded as one of the club's most valuable players, Grima's return has come sooner than expected. His natural fitness has been a key to his early comeback.

"I played on a few young North Ballarat forwards who are pretty promising and felt pretty good. Now i just have to keep pushing forward and build up my match fitness.

"If I'm not picked in the side on Thursday for the trip to Perth, I'll be going all-out to make sure I play against Collingwood in round two."

Ben Cunnington also played out the match with no sign of the knee trouble which has hampered his pre-season and Ben Ross showed some encouraging signs in his first match for almost 12 months.
