YOUNG North Melbourne forward Ben Warren will miss at least two games after surgeons repaired the fractured cheekbone sustained in Saturday's loss to St Kilda.
Warren, 20, collided with Raphael Clarke shortly before half-time and was taken to hospital with concussion.
He had surgery on Sunday morning and the injury was found to be more severe than initially thought.
"That's disappointing for Benny but that's the way it goes," football operations manager Donald McDonald said on Monday.
"He's had the surgery and that went all right, but the doctors were hopeful the injury wasn't as bad as that and they had to do a little more work than they thought they would.
"Sometimes on the severe end it can be four to six, so [two weeks is] about what we hoped it would be."
Fellow forward Sam Wright will miss at least this Sunday's clash with Adelaide with Monday scans revealing a slight kneecap impingement.
"He'll be one to two weeks. It's not as bad as what we first thought because we thought he had cartilage damage," McDonald said. "He'll definitely miss this week and then he'll have the bye before he's a chance to play the week after that."
However, McDonald said former captain Adam Simpson (calf), defender Daniel Pratt (knocked knee) and midfielder Daniel Wells (hip) were all expected to play this week.
"Simmo pulled up alright today and he'll just take it easier during the week but he'll be right to train," he said.
"We'll have our main training session later in the week because we play Sunday, and the longer week will suit Simmo. Pratty should be all right too.
"Wellsy has had this for a few weeks and it got a bit sore. He landed awkwardly at the start of the third quarter and he got sorer as the game progressed.
"He's pulled up all right. He's still a bit sore this morning but nothing out of the unusual.
"He'll be right to train later in the week and should be right to play. We won't take any risks with him but he's keen to play. We're managing him through it and he'll consult with the doctors later in the week but all reports at this stage are he'll be right."
McDonald said Matt Campbell was also expected to play this week after he pulled up well from his first AFL game since round seven.
"He was returning from two hamstring strains and he didn't have big minutes in the VFL game, so we weren't really keen on him playing a lot of minutes," he said.
"It was just one of those situations on the weekend when we had three blokes off the ground that we couldn't bring back on and then we got Simmo and Wellsy off at the same time, and we didn't want to play Matty anymore.
"For a couple of minutes there, we were a bit short, but he's pulled up very well and we're pleased with him."
McDonald denied the Roos were in an injury crisis and said the club had the depth to cover the loss of players at senior level.
"Lachie Hansen had a severe hamstring injury but he had his second week back in the VFL and will be pushing for senior selection this week as well," he said.
"Liam Anthony is another. He would have played round one but had a stress fracture on the eve of the season, but he had his second game back and his form was really good.
"He'll come under consideration and if he doesn't get a game this week, he'll be under consideration for the week after the bye.
"We've also got guys the calibre of Corey Jones, Daniel Harris, Michael Wundke and Josh Smith, who have been performing in the VFL.
"There's plenty to pick from, so we're very positive about the second half of the year."
McDonald said Jack Ziebell had recovered from gastro and there had been no other cases of the illness at Arden Street since.
