Five months after its biggest ever victory against Hawthorn, 127 points, North Melbourne again faced off against the Hawks in the Qualifying Final.

Peter Knights’ Hawthorn team had bounced back strongly to finish sixth after the 1994 home and away season, and a big win over premiership favourites West Coast in Round 20 meant they plenty of confidence.

Both teams had finished with a 13-9 win-loss ledger, and a rare Waverley Park final, effectively a home game for the Hawks made for an intriguing matchup.

North’s next generation of stars was beginning to blossom; the likes of Corey McKernan, David King and Glenn Archer all still under 50 games, with Wayne Carey, Anthony Rock and Anthony Stevens starting to reach their prime.

The Hawks were coming towards the end of a golden era, but still boasted outstanding talent, among them Chris Langford, Jason Dunstall, John Platten and Darren Jarman.

The early signs were worrying for North, as Hawthorn booted the first three goals.

But John Longmire hit the scoreboard with his first major, and a classic encounter began to unfurl.
