New North Melbourne coach David Noble has backed the versatility of recruit, Jaidyn Stephenson, opening the door for a potential midfield move.

Noble highlighted the importance of having more depth through the middle of the ground with the departure of Shaun Higgins sure to provide greater opportunity for some emerging youngsters.

“I had a good chat to Jaidyn and I’ve watched him a bit in Queensland. I saw him a couple of times on the wing and really liked what he had to offer, as a bit of point-of-difference,” he said.

Stephenson played predominantly as a forward during his time at Collingwood, but had previously made a name for himself in a midfield role at TAC Cup level.

A 28-disposal, five-goal haul in the national championships was one of the catalysts behind his selection at pick six at the 2017 draft.

“He’s (Stephenson) got speed and carry and great decision-making with the ball. He can kick it long and short, so his capacity to get the ball inside 50 with that connection is really good,” Noble added.

“I’d like to have some versatility through the running areas, our half-backs, wings and half-forwards. We’ve got to continue that through the midfield, and we’ve got to find some of those guys other spots and have that versatility.”

Stephenson arrived at Arden Street alongside teammate Atu Bosenavulagi during the trade period.

He booted 38 goals in 26 games as the NAB Rising Star winner in 2018.
