North Melbourne’s recent history of off-field success is well-documented, and its ability to field teams at AFL, AFLW, VFL and VFLW is a hallmark of the quality in which the club is run.

While each of the four teams have their own players and coaches, successes and failures, and goals and histories, they all fall under the banner of royal blue and white stripes. Four teams, one club.

This one club mentality was evident on Thursday night, with the VFL and VFLW sides sharing a training session ahead of their double header against Essendon this Saturday.

Joining forces for the start of the session, the sides participated in skills drills together before splitting off into their respective teams.

North head of development and VFL assistant coach, Gavin Brown, says the session was a roaring success.

“We needed to get a training session in on the Thursday and the VFLW girls were already training, so we just fit in with them and it worked out really well,” Brown told North Media.

“They did the warm up together, a handball drill together and a kicking drill together, and then we broke up into our teams.

“The boys really had to make sure their skills were up to scratch because the girls were really good, their kicking skills were excellent.”

While bringing the teams together in a playing capacity for the first time had the potential to create an awkward dynamic, the vibe around this extended North group was anything but.

Brown says he would be more than happy for a repeat of the session in the future should the opportunity arise.

“I thought it was fantastic, they trained really well and were up and about. It was a really good dynamic,” he said.

“It was pretty fun and jovial … it helps relationships working in together like that.

“There’s no reason why it can’t happen again, certainly the warm up and skills drills at the start. It worked out really well.”
