A second-round selection in the 2019 national draft, Charlie Comben came to Arden Street as a raw but overwhelmingly promising key position prospect.

Capable of playing in the ruck or as a key forward, Comben is a strong contested mark with a beautiful kicking action and agility the belies his 199 centimetre frame.

After impressing in the 2020 pre-season, his debut campaign ended before it could truly get underway, with stress fractures in his back seeing him unable to take to the field in any capacity.

North Melbourne debut: Round 22, 2021

2021: After missing all of the 2020 season through injury, hopes were high for Comben heading into 2021, however the injury bug bit again.

More stress fractures, this time in his right tibia, threatened to derail his campaign.

Comben returned from his injury during the season however, and kicked four goals in the first half of a practice match in Brisbane, before making his maiden VFL appearance not long after.

Kicking two goals and three behinds in his VFL debut against Port Melbourne, while also taking five marks and recording four tackles, Comben played a key role in the victory over Borough, providing a strong marking target and capably bringing the ball to ground.

After almost two years on the list, he made his AFL debut against Sydney in Round 20, kicking his first career goal after the final siren to cap of an extraordinary and well-deserved achievement.

Unfortunately, he suffered a broken collarbone in training the next week and missed the remainder of the season.

When fit, Comben has showed massive potential as a key forward, and could certainly be the missing piece in North’s forward line.

As for 2022, the prospect will be aiming for his first full season of football since his junior years, and to further his development as part of the club’s young forward group.
