AFL R17 preview: Roos host Dogs in Centenary clash

North Melbourne will host the Western Bulldogs in prime time on Thursday, as it looks to cap off its Centenary celebrations with a win

North Melbourne will host the Western Bulldogs in prime time on Thursday, as the club looks to celebrate its VFL/AFL Centenary with a win.

The Roos will want to quickly move on from their Round 16 defeat to Hawthorn, while the Dogs are eyeing a fourth win on the trot.

Round 17, North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
    Where: Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, VIC
When: Thursday, July 3 at 7.30pm AEST
How to watch: Channel 7, Foxtel, Kayo Sports

    The opposition

The Western Bulldogs enter Round 17 fresh off a nine-point triumph over Sydney.

It was a rollercoaster clash at the SCG, with Joel Freijah proving to be the crucial cog for the visitors as he booted four goals from 23 disposals to help get his side over the line.

Key forwards Sam Darcy and Aaron Naughton both looked dangerous inside 50, and will be eager to back up their three-goal performances at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.

    MEET THE 1925 KANGAROOS

33 men made up North Melbourne's first VFL list. These are their stories.

    What the coach has said

North Melbourne senior coach Alastair Clarkson on Tuesday: "We need to be strong in the contest because if an opposition gets the opportunity to be shoulders out like Hawthorn were last week then (Jack) Gunston kicks seven (goals), (Mabior) Chol kicks five and (Max) Ramsden kicks three.

"Anyone will kick goals if you can't compete in the contest through the middle of the ground strongly, so that's a key focus for us."

    Last time we met

The two clubs last met in Round 1 this season, with the Dogs overcoming a plucky Roos outfit by 16 points in a sweltering Marvel Stadium.

The Roos trailed by just seven points at three-quarter time after Nick Larkey's fifth goal closed the margin, but despite a three-goal final-term cameo from Paul Curtis, the Dogs kicked away.

Big man Tristan Xerri (51 hitouts) dominated the ruck against Tim English and Sam Darcy to give first use to Tom Powell (27 touches), Harry Sheezel (31) and Jy Simpkin (30).

AFL R17 match report: Dogs rain on Roos' Centenary parade

North Melbourne has fallen short in the club's VFL/AFL Centenary game against the Western Bulldogs, going down by 49 points

North Melbourne has fallen short in the club's VFL/AFL Centenary game against the Western Bulldogs, going down by 49 points.

Watched by a throng of club greats at Marvel Stadium, the Kangaroos were overrun after pushing the Dogs hard for three quarters, losing 20.14 (134) to 13.7 (85).

KANGAROOS v BULLDOGS Full match coverage and stats

Already undermanned going into the game, the Roos lost star midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke to concussion in the first quarter after a fend-off from Ed Richards collected him high.

    00:39

Big man Tristan Xerri was also left nursing a series of heavy knocks during the fourth term.

    01:18

Colby McKercher, who extended his contract at Arden St during the week, underlined his value to the club by winning 32 touches and a game-high 555 metres gained.

Spearhead Nick Larkey kicked four goals in the opening term, and it would have been five if not for a set shot he pushed across the face of goal from 25m out after the siren.

    01:23

Larkey finished with five for the game, but not to be outdone, Dogs forward Aaron Naughton returned to form with a five-goal bag of his own.

Tom Liberatore (27 disposals, 10 tackles, six clearances two goals), celebrating game No.250, was prolific in his milestone match for the Bulldogs, and skipper Marcus Bontempelli (25 disposals, 10 tackles, two goals) was equally as influential.

Two-time North Melbourne premiership coach Denis Pagan served a vintage rev-up pre-game to steel the Roos for their Centenary celebration.

Past greats joined the current players in forming a circle around Pagan on the ground, a couple of minutes before the first bounce, for his pre-match speech.

    02:30

With Pagan's words ringing in their ears, the Kangaroos started brightly, with Larkey's four goals including a brilliant coast-to-coast move.

A six-point lead at the first change evaporated as the high-flying Naughton began the second term in a menacing mood.

The Roos stayed with the Dogs, going goal for goal, with Cam Zurhaar's thumping strike from the centre square the pick of the bunch, before conceding two costly goals deep into time-on to hand the Bulldogs a 13-point lead at half-time.

Cooper Harvey thumped home a set shot from the 50m arc on the boundary as North Melbourne closed to within two points approaching time-on in the third quarter, but from then on it was one-way traffic as the Bulldogs kicked away with the game.
