VFL R13 team: Defensive duo among four ins

Defensive talls Kallan Dawson and Wil Dawson are among four inclusions for North Melbourne ahead of Saturday's reserves game against Carlton

Defensive talls Kallan Dawson and Wil Dawson are among four inclusions for North Melbourne ahead of Saturday's reserves game against Carlton.

The pair return from AFL duty last week for the Round 13 game at Ikon Park.

They are joined in the selected side by Connor Downie and Ben Huggard.

Utility Eddie Ford comes out of the side after suffering a foot injury in last weekend's game against Port Melbourne.

Darcy Macpherson is being managed this week, while Oliver Lowe and Tom Cappellari have been omitted.

Jackson Archer will again line up in defence for the Kangaroos as he continues to build back to match fitness, after playing managed minutes in his return from a hamstring injury last weekend.

VFL R13 report: Roos storm home to secure double over Blues

North Melbourne has kicked the last two goals of the game to snatch a one-point victory over Carlton at Ikon Park

North Melbourne has kicked the last two goals of the game to snatch a one-point victory over Carlton at Ikon Park.

It was another nail-biting win over the Blues, with the Roos' goalkicking accuracy proving crucial as they picked up the 10.13 (73) to 11.8 (74) win on Saturday evening.

BLUES V KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

Connor Downie's late snap goal levelled the scores, before a rushed behind was enough to see the Roos get over the line by the barest of margins.

Neither side was able to establish scoreboard dominance, with the Blues' 14-point advantage late in the second term the largest lead for the match.

Cooper Harvey (25 disposals, six marks) continued to thrive in his new role off half-back, with his running power and ball use helping the Roos slingshot forward. The No.37 patrolled the wide areas all afternoon and dropped deep to nullify the Blues' attacks with his intercept marking.

Finnbar Maley (23 disposals, nine marks, one goal) played one of his best games for the year, using his excellent marking ability to impact the contest.

He repeatedly worked up to the wing to take a number of contested marks and claimed a speccy close to goal which led to him kicking his solitary major for the afternoon.

Young gun Will Phillips' impressive run of form continued as he picked up 25 disposals and seven tackles.

Phillips was physical in and around the contest with his tackling and relentless attack on the footy. He also used his pace and poise to explode out of stoppages, seeing him finish with a game-high nine clearances.

Playing as the primary ruck, Callum Coleman-Jones was strong again. He fought through a physical ruck battle to pick up 22 disposals and eight clearances.

Zane Duursma (16 disposals, three goals) was more than handy around the ground as he utilised his speed and smarts on the ball and out in space.

The utility had a blistering opening term, notching seven disposals, a major and the goal assist for Zac Banch's opener which was a long bomb to the top of the square.

Small forward Zac Banch worked tirelessly to apply pressure on defence and drop into dangerous positions in attack. He added another three goals to his tally for the year.

Redeployed in defence, Wil Dawson's (12 disposals, seven intercepts) combination with Matt Whitlock (15 disposals, seven intercepts) and Cooper Trembath (nine disposals, seven marks) made for exciting viewing as fans saw more glimpses into the club's key back stocks waiting in the wings.

    What the coach said

VFL coach Tom Lynch on the win: "It was great. Carlton was terrific. Both of our games this year (against Carlton) have been really hard-fought, and they’ve been really tight in the contest and both teams have hardly given an inch.

"Some of our contests and the way we played throughout was really impressive and the way the boys went about it in a real team-first way was great for me as a coach."

On the talls: "Today we had a taller line-up, and our boys were really strong in the air, particularly in the second half.

"We've been really pleased with the development of Finnbar Maley, who was really strong in the air, along with Wil Dawson who was great as well with his aerial work. Cooper Trembath and Matt Whitlock were as well.

"Coleman-Jones was well experienced in the ruck, as was Teakle and Taylor Goad who continues to impress with his development, so really pleased across the board with the talls."
