FREMANTLE has suspended senior player Michael Johnson indefinitely after he was advised by the WA police that he would be charged with drug offences.

Johnson is being investigated by WA Police for a matter allegedly involving cocaine after an incident in Perth on Saturday night.

Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich said that the club was yet to a reach a decision on what club sanctions would be imposed on the 25-year-old.

“We are very disappointed that Michael placed himself in a situation that allowed these circumstances to arise," Rosich said. “Due to the serious nature of the matter and an impending police charge, the club believes that standing Michael down was the appropriate course of action to take at this stage.

“The action taken reflects the serious nature of the situation at hand. It will also allow Michael to focus on all related legal issues and make that his priority.

“Michael is distressed by the turn of events and, in the best interests of his welfare, we will take the appropriate time to work through the situation with him and his legal representative."

Rosich explained that Johnson acted responsibly in the aftermath of the incident keeping the club informed and cooperating with police and the AFL.

“The AFL was advised on Sunday of this matter and will continue to be updated," Rosich said.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said on Tuesday morning that the pending charges didn't tarnish the reputation of the League, and that the AFL was committed to its education campaign.
