George Wardlaw's progress since first featuring for the club at the VFL level back in Round 1 has co-captain Jy Simpkin eager to see the budding midfielder granted a senior opportunity soon.

No.4 pick Wardlaw played his fifth reserves game for the year on Saturday afternoon, finishing the 75-point win over Frankston with 19 possessions, five tackles and two goals.

With fresh injuries being sustained by a host of Kangaroos coming out of the team's bruising defeat to the Power, the probability of a Wardlaw debut this weekend may be higher than it has been over recent weeks.

"There's every chance he does play this week which is really exciting for us as players as well as for our fans who are waiting to see what he can do on the big stage," Simpkin told reporters on Monday morning.

"He's definitely putting his hand up and he's been doing all the right things on and off the field, too.

"In that phone box, when the ball's there to be won he brings that effort and intensity in big strides.

"He's only a young guy so we can't expect too much from him, but I'm excited to see what he can do (when he gets a call-up)."

The draftee's potential inclusion could provide the Roos with a much-needed injection of energy, having struggled to recapture the competitive form displayed over the season's opening month.

However, despite being on the receiving end of some disappointing results, Simpkin believes the club is in a better position to what it was compared to this time last year.

"(In comparison to this time last season) we've improved immensely," Simpkin said.

"It feels like we're a lot better and it does feel like we are very close to clicking.

"On the weekend we had more disposals than Port Adelaide but our finishing skills just weren't up the scratch. If we clean up our own mistakes we're a much better team and then we're in that game on Saturday."
