North Melbourne youngster Josh Goater has signed a one-year contract extension, securing his future at Arden Street until at least the end of 2026.
An explosive and athletic defender, Goater made his debut for the Kangaroos late in 2022 after he was taken at pick 22 in the 2021 National Draft from the Calder Cannons. He has since played 12 AFL games.
The signing shows the club's commitment to the 22-year-old, who ruptured his Achilles in Round 1 of last season.
He enjoyed a strong pre-season in the lead-up to Christmas but has suffered an unfortunate run of soft tissue injuries so far in 2025.
He recently faced another setback in his recovery, leaving his timeline for a return to play uncertain.
North Melbourne head of football talent Brady Rawlings said Goater remains a key part of the club’s future plans.
"Josh has shown tremendous promise when he is fully fit, and the club’s pleased to see him commit to another season at Arden Street," Rawlings said.
"He’s a tremendous athlete and interceptor. He's also damaging with the ball in hand and can help us rebound to set up scoring opportunities.
"We’re hoping this new extension gives Josh the security and peace of mind he needs to fully focus on his recovery, and we look forward to him returning to play soon."
