North Melbourne congratulates outgoing general manager of strategy and legal, James Gallagher on his appointment as chief executive of the AFL Players’ Association.

Gallagher will depart Arden Street after four years leading the club’s strategy team. A key driver in bringing to life club-shaping projects, Gallagher has brought reliability, a willingness to challenge the status quo, and clear and different thinking to many and varied issues and opportunities facing the club over his tenure.

Gallagher oversaw the delicate nature of the club’s exit from Tasmania and then the club’s recent agreement to play two home games in Western Australia, providing members and fans two extra home games back in its Melbourne heartland from 2026.

His most recent major project has been leading the club’s engagement with Development Victoria and the State Government to favourably position itself in the next stage of the Arden Precinct.

“I’ve loved my time at North Melbourne. AFL clubs are special places and I will look back over my four years here with great fondness,” Gallagher said.

“I was lucky enough to be at the club to see our AFLW side win its first premiership, and I know it’s a program that is set up for continued success moving forward.

“I have great confidence in the work being done in the AFL program and in those in off-field leadership roles who will ensure success is not too far away.”

North Melbourne chief executive Jen Watt congratulated Gallagher on his appointment.

“James has forged an outstanding reputation, not only within our club over the past four years, but across the football industry and we’re thrilled to see him take this next step,” Watt said.

“The strategy team is at the heart of everything we do as a club, and James has always led with a club-first mentality, executing his role with a single-minded focus to get the best possible outcome for the club, always.

“Most importantly, he has been a respected and trusted colleague to all staff across all departments– commercial, football, media, consumer, and community – James has had an impact on every area of the club.

“We wish James, Emily, Clemmie and Posie the very best in this next chapter.”
