In his sixth season at AFL level, North Melbourne midfielder Tom Powell is hunting success.

Powell, who cemented his status among the Kangaroos' first-choice midfielders last season, officially committed his future to the club on Friday.

His new contract extension will keep him at Arden St until at least the end of 2028, and his hopes are high for what those coming seasons will deliver.

"I'm so excited to be here for another two years - three including this year," he told NMFC Media.

"I haven't had the success that I would have been hoping for just yet, but I'm sure it's not far away.

"It'll make it all all the more sweet when we do get it, and I'm confident the group of boys we've got can jump up the ladder this year."

At 23, Powell is among the more senior members of a talent-packed group of young Kangaroos. Among the "absolute guns" he name-checks are Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, Finn O'Sullivan, Colby McKercher and Zane Duursma.

"I've got some great mates here. We've got such a good young group," he said.

"I want to get success with this group of boys and this team. And I feel like we're on the way.

"I just can't wait to see what we can do."

Originally drafted from Sturt in South Australia with pick No.13 in 2020, Powell played every game for the Roos last season.

He delivered a career-high 23 disposals per game on his way to a second top-10 finish in the Syd Barker Medal, all while playing a variety of roles in midfield and further up the ground.

After an off-season focused on building his lower body strength to enable him to explode out of contests, he expects to again showcase his versatility this season.

"We've got a heap of boys that can swing through the midfield, which is a great weapon our side has," he said. "A lot of runners, elite kicks, contested players. So I'll probably (continue to) play a mix of half-forward, a bit of midfield.

"I feel like I've been improving each year. I'm still not anywhere near the level I want to get to just yet, but I feel like I've got great coaches and great teammates around me to help me get there.

"But my number one focus is on the team's success.

"I know we're going to be pushing a lot of teams, winning a lot more games, so I'm so excited for that. I can't wait to have that winning feeling a lot more."
