North Melbourne extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Bernie McCarthy, after the much loved Shinboner passed away on Saturday, aged 75.

McCarthy played 148 games for North between 1962 and 1971, combining with John Dugdale as the club’s most influential key forwards throughout the era.

Shinboner No.540, McCarthy was a strong overhead mark and was known for his willingness to move the ball on from a mark or contest at speed; a trait considered well ahead of its time.

McCarthy wore No.1 throughout his career, and his 148 games stands as the most of any North player in that jumper.

Perhaps his most outstanding individual game came in Round 16, 1969, when he had 31 disposals, 11 marks and four goals.

McCarthy, a life member, was also part of North’s night premiership teams in 1965 and 1966.
