A standout defensive game from North Melbourne draftee Jamie MacMillan helped the Werribee Tigers to its first win of the VFL season on Sunday.

Kangaroos’ development coach Jason Lappin described the 18 year-old’s performance as ‘the best’ of his season so far.

With 24 disposals, five marks, four tackles and three spoils, it was an impressive outing for the former Oakleigh Charger.

“Jamie provided plenty of run out of the backline and gave some excellent spoils throughout the afternoon,” Lappin relayed to kangaroos.com.au.

“He also used the ball really well and set a new level as far as his game is concerned.”

At the opposite end of the ground, Ben Warren’s efforts up forward kept the Tigers within striking distance.

With an eye on making it back into the North senior side, Warren (18 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles) booted three goals in the first half.

“He definitely found some form this week,” Lappin said.

“He could have easily finished the day with seven goals but he missed four shots on goal. Three went wide and one went out on the full but Ben shouldn’t dwell on that because his work rate was great and he hit-up very well.”

Rookie Matthew Scott (17 disposals, 4 clearances, 3 tackles, 1 goal) continues to show that he’s not out of place in the senior VFL side while Ben Speight (22 disposals, 8 marks, 3 clearances, 2 tackles) grows in confidence coming back from a broken jaw.
Back from his one match suspension, Alan Obst brought his usual aggression and toughness to the contest.

“He was terrific,” Lappin said.

“Some of his play was very courageous and his commitment to the ball was brilliant.”

In the reserves, Conor Meredith (19 disposals, 5 marks) had his best game for the year while Majak Daw (14 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles) dominated in the ruck with 17 hit-outs and kicked three goals.

Werribee with an emphatic 183-point win.
