He’s yet to reach the lofty heights of his 2011 All-Australian season, but this week’s battle against the Power ignites memories of one of Drew Petrie’s most dominant performances.
In round 14 of last year he played a game the greatest forwards would have been proud of, almost eclipsing a ten-year mark set by arguably the best ever Kangaroo - Wayne Carey.
On a cool evening at AAMI Stadium, Petrie was often manned by two or even three defenders, but it wasn’t enough to stop him pulling down a remarkable nine contested marks - just one short of Carey's effort 11 years earlier.

To understand the significance of Petrie's game, it must be noted that the entire Port Adelaide side managed just one more contested mark for the match.
Even more important was the fact he was in dangerous spots when hauling in the marks, several of them with his hands all but held behind his back. He took eight grabs inside 50, finished the game with four goals and was awarded the three votes by the umpires on Brownlow Medal night.
North didn’t have it all its own way in front of 17,275 fans, but after a six-goal third quarter off the back of Petrie’s brilliance, eventually won by 45-points.
The number 20 wasn’t the only one to record a feat to be remembered on that night though. Todd Goldstein’s 54 hit-outs would surely have gained more attention if not for his vice-captain’s marking prowess.
Petrie’s form has been the subject of debate among media circles early this year, though his three goals against the Bulldogs surely went some way to silencing his critics. It’s a big ask to expect a similar performance to last time around, but just his presence is sure to warrant plenty of thought from Matthew Primus come Saturday.
